Your first expedition

  1. Begin when you’re ready. The first timer starts when you press Begin. Each round gives you one open-answer prompt.
  2. Name one correct answer. Type one answer at a time. A recognized answer finishes the round. If a guess is not in the bank, you can try again within the same 25 seconds, up to five guesses. You can skip; a skip earns zero points.
  3. Look for the less obvious. A correct answer earns 10–100 points. Familiar answers count, while an unusual answer can earn more.
  4. Pause at a field note. Between rounds, discover a small fact. The next timer starts only when you continue.
  5. Bring something back. After seven rounds, review the answer banks, explore the sources, and share a result that keeps the answers secret.

What makes an answer a deep cut?

A deep cut earns at least 70 points. These are editorial estimates of familiarity within each prompt’s answer bank, rather than measured statistics about what other players answered. They’re meant to reward an interesting thought, not to establish an objective ranking of knowledge.

For example, a prompt about musical instruments may place a familiar instrument near the start of its scale and a less familiar one further along. The rarest acceptable word isn’t always the most fun discovery.

Your journey through the landscape follows the round number. As you descend into the ocean or climb a mountain, the prompts become harder; your score doesn’t change the difficulty.

Daily or unlimited practice?

The daily expedition resets at 00:00 UTC. Everyone who starts on the same UTC date receives the same landscape and seven prompts. Your first completed daily result is saved in your browser’s log. There is no account or global leaderboard.

Unlimited practice lets you choose from ocean, mountain, sky, space, cavern, forest, and desert landscapes. You can start as many practice expeditions as you like, but the current fallback collection is finite and questions can repeat. Each expedition still lasts seven rounds.

Daily questions may come from our reviewed editorial collection or an AI-assisted set that passed our checks. The question order is fixed when a daily set is first played; a later update will not change that day’s expedition.

Give your second thought a chance

Start with a safe answer, then use a few seconds to follow an association. Think of a different field, a less familiar example, or a word you learned years ago. Don’t trade every correct answer for a risky guess: seven solid answers can make a satisfying expedition.

Read the scope carefully. A planet, a moon, and a constellation are different things. Use a single name rather than a list, and avoid extra commentary in the answer box.

Spelling, missing answers, and timing

Answers match without regard to case, accents, or punctuation. Explicitly listed spelling variants count. We don’t silently turn a different word into the one we think you meant.

An answer bank can miss a valid answer, especially for a broad category. “Not in this answer set” means just that. Send us the prompt, your answer, and a reliable source so we can improve future games. A correction won’t rewrite a daily set that people have already played.

The server checks the deadline when your answer arrives. Leave a moment for your connection. Refreshing or switching tabs doesn’t pause the timer; the round continues from its original deadline. If your connection drops, the game tries to resume the saved expedition.

Share the discovery, keep the surprise

Copy a seven-square result or download your own result card. Both show points and deep cuts without revealing prompts or answers. Sharing is optional and nothing is posted automatically. The daily date helps friends compare the same expedition.

Your log stays in this browser. Clearing browser data or using another device gives you a fresh log. Curiosity doesn’t need a perfect streak.
